NORWICH DEVILS 2008 REGULAR SEASON
GAME 2 - MAY 4 th, 2008
Norwich DEVILS 22
Southern SUNDEVILS 6

DEVILS STAY UNBEATEN

May 4 th, 2008 by Pete Wrigley

Troy Schmigdall and Gavin Price

The Norwich Devils maintained their two year unbeaten home record with a good performance to beat a strong Southern Sundevils team.

The game didn't start well for the Devils when they had to punt on their opening drive. Punter Ian Buchett had to scramble after a wayward snap and ended up getting tackled inside his own 10 yard line. Southern wasted no time in opening the scoring when running back Tim Iles ran in for a 9 yard touchdown on their first offensive play. The Sundevils then attempted a two point conversion, but Iles was stopped short by a strong tackle from Norwich linebacker Mike Brown.

With no further scoring in the quarter, the Devils started the second period 6 points adrift.

Norwich went close early in the second quarter when they drove down to the Sundevils 2 yard line, but had to settle for a field goal attempt on fourth down. However, Steve Playford's kick was blocked to leave the Devils still scoreless. On their next possession, the Devils drove 76 yards for the tieing score when Travis Simmons ran in from 2 yards out. Playford's extra point kick was blocked so the scores remained tied at 6 - 6, which is how it stayed until half time.

On their opening drive of the second half; Norwich took the ball 63 yards on 15 plays, to go ahead for the first time on a 3 yard run from quarterback Troy Schmidgall. This time the Devils went for the two point conversion and James Anderson ran in to increase the lead to 14 - 6. On the second play of their next drive Southern quarterback Jonathan Baynham went for the big pass, but was intercepted by Norwich cornerback Martin Ray, who returned the ball 42 yards to the Sundevils 13 yard line. Two plays later Schmidgall found receiver Joe Konieczny for an 11 yard touchdown pass. Anderson again ran in the two point conversion to extend the lead to 22 - 6. Neither team was able to trouble the scoreboard in the final quarter, leaving the Devils unbeaten after their first two games.

The Devils would have been pleased with their efforts against a team who last season were in the top division. Offensively they moved the ball well, whilst defensively they kept the Sundevils scoreless for the remainder of
the game after conceding the early score, gaining 4 interceptions in all, 3 from corner Martin Ray.

They now have to wait 4 weeks for their next game which is away to the Kent Exiles, who last week opened their campaign with a win against Ipswich Cardinals.
